Markuz was born in 1971 in Zwettl, Lower Austria — and music was his language from the very beginning. At five he played drums, at ten clarinet, and at sixteen he picked up the saxophone. As he says himself: „It was pretty much the only thing I ever wanted to do.“ At nineteen he turned professional.

His musical path led him to the Conservatory of Vienna, where he studied jazz saxophone and pedagogy, and from there to the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. He studied under Dave Liebman and Bob Mintzer, and worked as a sideman and studio musician with Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Kirk Covington and Waldeck.

In 2020 Markuz released his first solo EP „Celtic Dance“ — immediately entering the Top 10 of the Smooth Jazz Listener Countdown with three songs. His album „A World of Bliss“ (2021) reached #49 on the Top 100 Smooth Jazz Album Charts.

But Markuz was always more than a musician. Alongside his career on stage, a second path of the heart opened up — the healing power of sound, frequency and Eastern wisdom.

He trained as a certified Shiatsu practitioner, explored the effects of psychoactive frequencies on the human body and produced seven CDs of vibrational music that work on a cellular level. In 2011 he discovered Tibetan Buddhist wisdom through the teachings of Geshe Michael Roach — an encounter that fundamentally changed his life. From 2014 to 2022 he completed 18 courses of the Asian Classics Institute (ACI) and four ACI teacher training programs. He now passes on this timeless wisdom as a certified ACI lecturer.

From all these experiences — music, sound, bodywork, Tibetan wisdom and personal transformation — Markuz distilled a holistic vision that he now shares through Smooth Buddha Sax.

„I still want to make the world a better place with my music. I want to heal — and help people reach a place where there is love, joy and no suffering.“

Every note is received from the present moment. Every session unrepeatable. Every sound a gift.
